Digital minimalism

After reading Cal Newport's Deep Work last year, I decided to minimize all the distractions in my life and improve my attention span to be able to focus on what's important.

Here are the some of the actions I took to declutter my digital life.

  • Deleted my Instagram, Snapchat, Google+, and Twitter profiles.
  • Anonymized my Facebook and LinkedIn profiles so that I cannot be found.
  • Unfollowed everyone on Facebook, deleted 1/3 of my friends.
  • Sold Pebble smart watch and Fitbit.
  • Sold Google Home.
  • Deleted all social media apps from my phone.
  • Quit everything Google, including Gmail (another post coming).
  • Always keeping my phone in Do Not Disturb mode.
  • Disabled notifications for most of the apps.
  • Started replying to non-urgent emails/messages once a week.
  • Started using RSS again to follow my favorite blogs.
  • Used RescueTime to visualize where I spent most of my time online.
  • Ended the online forum community I started 10+ years ago that had 20K members.
  • Killed all my side projects and businesses. First time that I'm not coding in the evenings/weekends since 2003.
  • Put all electronic devices away from my bed.
  • Quit online dating.
